A survey results released by Common Sense Media give us a lot of valuable insights on the kids media use among children age 0-8 in America in 2013. The study is a follow-up to the same study conducted in 2011 and there is a significant trend in the media use among children. Below is the highlight of the study and a very informative infographic.
- 75% of kids surveyed have access to mobile devices at home
- Number of kids who’ve used mobile devices increased from 38% to 72%
- Traditional TV still dominates children’s screen time at 50% of total viewing
- 38% Kids below 2 years old have used a mobile device
The American Academy of Pediatrics advised that children below 2 years old should be screen-free because they believe children can best develop by interacting with people and not media devices. But as shown in the study, kids are now introduced at such a young age and most of them have access to mobile devices such as tablets at home. This is very consistent to another study conducted which revealed that almost half of Americans own a tablet.
I have a toddler too and as early as 1 year old I have introduced her to educational apps in ipad mini with my supervision of course. I personally don’t see anything wrong with this as long as we keep it to a minimum and I see to it that she also experience physical activities and active play. How about you, do you let your kids use mobile devices?
